The BBBS-KC community based program matches children ages 8-14 from one-parent or non-traditional households with caring, adult mentors. “Bigs” and “Littles” spend a few hours each week for at least one year doing normal, everyday activities that lead to life-changing friendships over time. The Kauffman Scholars Mentor Program matches high school students enrolled in the Kauffman Scholars program with a Big Brother or Big Sister. The students are first generation college students and need friendship and guidance with the transition from high school to college. Volunteer opportunities are available for adults 21 years of age and older.

Cabot Westside Health Center, an outpatient community health center, celebrated
100 years of providing health care and dental services to those in need in 2006. Cabot fills a unique niche in the safety net system as the only full-service, bilingual/Spanish comprehensive health and dental facility in the Greater Kansas City area. Cabot serves nearly 7,600 patients annually through 22,000 visits. Only 7 percent of patients have private health insurance. Nearly 90 percent of patients speak only Spanish, so to ensure clear, culturally component communication all staff are bilingual. Services provided include family medicine, adult health, pediatrics, prevention programs, women’s health, OB program, WIC programs, health education and full preventative and restorative dental care. Cabot is open two evenings per week and has emergency walk-in times for patients needing immediate care without an appointment.

For over 20 years, Community LINC has provided a critical safety net to homeless families in Kansas City by providing shelter and programming serving approximately 700 homeless families with more than 2,000 children. Outreach programs have provided services and case management to over 1,000 additional at-risk families. Community LINC creates self-sufficient families and communities with a focus on teaching life skills and accountability, yielding outstanding results. On average, 70 percent of residents in the transitional housing program leave for permanent housing and 83 percent will still be living independently at the end of the two-year or longer follow-up period.

Mid America Assistance Coalition’s mission is “to strengthen the social service community through information systems, training and advocacy.” The MAACLink data system is a web-based HMIS (Homeless Management Information System) used by HUD-funded agencies serving the homeless. In the 7-county Greater Kansas City area over 180 individual agencies with over 260 direct service locations use MAACLink to provide online, real-time information about homeless and emergency assistance resources and services. Aggregate reporting from MAACLink is used to inform public policy makers and planning organizations about the plight of low-income and homeless individuals and families to assist in decision-making. Through the Strengths Based Case Management program, SBCM case managers at over 35 area agencies receive training and support through monthly meetings and an annual training conference. Mid America Assistance Coalition does not provide direct services to clients. Rather, it provides services to agencies through the MAACLink data system, which provides a wide range of homeless and emergency assistance services directly to clients.

Synergy Services is a violence prevention and intervention agency that extends a lifeline to victims of domestic violence, child abuse, homelessness, bullying and family dysfunction. The Visiting Nurse Association Corporation provides intermittent home health care services in the comfort and convenience of a patient’s home during a time of medical need and under physician’s orders. VNA’s services include skilled nursing care; physical, occupational and speech therapy; social service and dietary counseling; cardiopulmonary care; infusion nursing; mental health; and enterostomal therapy. VNA utilizes tele-health home monitoring to manage patients seven days a week, providing preventative and proactive care to patients. Community health screenings are conducted at health fairs and senior nutrition/residential sites. Screenings, which include blood pressure, blood sugar and blood cholesterol, are offered with education and referrals to appropriate agencies, when appropriate.

DLC’s programming addresses the risk factors of poor academic preparation, decreased post-secondary educational opportunities, and limited economic opportunities.
